AI agent vs an answering service for the service line

An answering service takes a message. An AI service agent, in this product, books, moves, and cancels the appointment in Xtime when the job is on the menu, and hands the caller to your desk when it is not. No answering-service brand is named on this page. The choice is the category, not a ranking.
What an answering service is
An answering service puts a person, often off site, on the line to write down who called and why. That is a real product with a real use. It is the right buy when the store wants a message and has people in the morning who will call back and book. It is the wrong buy when the guest needed a time tonight and will not wait. Nothing here says answering services are careless. It says they are built to capture a message, not to write your scheduler.
Where an answering service is strong
It is strong when you want a human voice that is not your employee, when the call volume after hours is low enough that a next-morning callback still saves the job, and when you do not want another system logged into Xtime. It is also strong as a bridge while a store decides what to automate. A message you trust is better than an appointment that was never in the scheduler.
How DealersThink differs
Riley answers the service line 24/7 and, through a certified Xtime integration, books, moves, and cancels in Xtime. A recall, a diagnostic, or an op code the scheduler will not take is not turned into a fake appointment. It goes to your BDC desk or waits in Leads to recover. Certified CDK history, customer, vehicle, and repair orders, is what that desk can see. Casey is a separate agent for after-hours sales and works from your vAuto inventory. Certification of the CDK and Xtime integrations was confirmed on October 17, 2026.
Who should pick which
| Question | Answering service | DealersThink |
|---|---|---|
| What the caller gets tonight | A message taken | An Xtime appointment, when the menu allows it |
| Who books the scheduler | Your staff, from the message | Riley, in Xtime |
| A person in the loop | The operator, then your staff in the morning | Your staff, on the desk, when the call needs them |
| Languages | Depends on the service you hire | English and Spanish. Each store turns Spanish on |
| Sales after hours | Another message | Casey, from your vAuto inventory |
Pick an answering service if a faithful message is the whole job. Pick DealersThink if the service line should book Xtime and your own people should still have the desk. Pricing is not in the table. It depends on rooftops and products.

FAQ
AI vs an answering service vs an outsourced BDC: what is the difference?
An answering service takes a message. An outsourced BDC is another company’s agents working your calls. An in-house BDC is your own team, on the hours you staff. Riley books into Xtime and hands the call to your desk when a person is needed. The longer comparison is on the compare pages.
Does it book directly into Xtime, or just take a message?
Riley books, moves, and cancels appointments in Xtime through a certified Xtime integration. The appointment is written in Xtime. It is not left as a message for someone to type in later.
Does it work after hours, on weekends, and on holidays?
Riley answers service calls 24/7, including nights and weekends, and when the store is closed. Casey answers after-hours sales calls and sales calls when the sales desk is already on another call. The store’s own desk takes the calls that need a person during the hours the store staffs it.
What does it cost?
